William Cope Moyers

Our first speaker for Expanding Understanding:  A Faith and Life Speaker Series, was William Cope Moyers.

William C. Moyers, renowned author and Vice President of External Affairs for the Hazelden Foundation, will be the inaugural speaker for the "Expanding Understanding: A Faith and Life Speaker Series."  This public forum took place Sunday, September 16, at 3:00 at Fish Lake Lutheran Church in Harris.

The focus of Mr. Moyers' work is to improve the public's understanding of issues related to addiction, treatment and recovery.  He uses his professional expertise and own personal battles with chemical dependency to highlight the power of addiction and the promise of recovery.  Mr. Moyers is also the author of "Broken," a best-selling memoir published in 2006.  He has appeared on CNN's Larry King Live, the Oprah Winfrey Show, NBC Today Show, Good Morning America on ABC, and his work has been featured in scores of newspapers and other publications over the years.

The title of his presentation is "On the 'Broken' Road of Recovery With the Next Generation", and offers empowering information for each and every one of us on how we can help change the terms of addiction for those struggling now, as well as for the next generation.  The topics Mr. Moyers will address include:

  1. Identifying and understanding the origins of the stigma of addiction, and why it is so powerful even  today.
  2. The role of the public in taking necessary steps to promote the power and possibility of recovery.
  3. How to talk to the next generation about addiction, treatment and recovery.

A copy of William's latest book, Broken, is available in our church library.
