Lent, Holy Week & Easter 2008

"Once Upon a Tree"
"Once upon a tree, a good man died,
and though He did no crime, He was crucified.
If the story ended there, we would have no story to share"

A Lenten Mid-Week Worship Series

Many tales start out with the introductory phrase, "Once upon a time...," preparing the reader for a collection of dramatic events, unbelievable tales, or other exciting and amazing happenings.  When we hear that phrase we know that there is a tale to follow - perhaps one of intrigue, adventure, fantasy, or love.   The familiar phrase "Once upon a time..." opens the heart and mind of the reader while taking them to places that only the imagination can go.  Not unlike what the story of Jesus and his life, death, resurrection, and ascension provides - except for one difference: Jesus' story is true.

So, to assist you in your Lenten journey this year, we are going to be telling tales - tales of faith, hope, loss, and love, as we reflect on the significance and purpose of trees.  Trees are both a scriptural and cultural image of life, death, strength, hope, and growth.  Many tales about trees have been written or told that depict such images for us.  That's why, during Lent this year, which is typically a time that we focus on images of life, death, strength, hope, and growth, we will be hearing tales of trees as we connect those tales to our own personal journeys of faith.  We hope that this may be an opportunity for you to grow and be strengthened in faith as we recall Jesus' story, and begin our own stories with the phrase "Once upon a tree..."
