Mission of the Month at Fish Lake Lutheran

Are you are familiar with the song “If we are the Body” by Casting Crowns?  It asks “if we are the body why aren’t his arms reaching, why aren’t his hands healing, why aren’t his words teaching and why aren’t his feet going?” What we hear in that song is that we are Messengers of God to speak his word and do as he would.

We are blessed in so many ways so why not take what God has given us and share it with others.

Our sacrificial giving seems to be strong and abundant during the holidays while the remainder of the months we aren’t as focused or maybe unaware of where to start. There are so many groups, organizations and charities out there and it’s hard to know which one your donation will do the most good for.

So at Fish Lake Lutheran we have what we call our “Mission of the Month” program where we can give locally, globally, or to specific organizations that have directly touched the lives of members of our congregation.

It can be much more fulfilling when you know where your gift is going and knowing that you made a difference. We at Fish Lake Lutheran have given to many groups and organizations. Those of you who have participated in giving Christmas gifts to local families through Child Services know how giving locally is fulfilling. Just knowing the names of the people make it so much more personal. Families who have participated in that way have witnessed first hand that not all families are able to afford gifts just because it’s Christmas.

Giving isn't always just financially either. There are so many ways to give. Your time is always a great way to give -baking and donating items new and used. We can contact local businesses and ask them to donate items or gift certificates. You could also check with your employers, your company might be interested in being involved in giving back to the community.

The nice thing about Mission of the Month is that each month it will be something new and you will be able to find the one you feel passionate about. We have several organizations/causes in mind, but are always looking for more, and so we need to hear from you - what are you passionate about that you would like to see Fish Lake call it's Mission of the Month? Maybe you have an organization or cause that touches your heart and you would like us to focus on them one month.  Maybe you know a family that needs some support with groceries, shoes, clothing, and gift cards to use for necessities or maybe just some home baked meals and goodies.

You can contact the church office with any questions or if you would like to be involved in the monthly planning and collecting or to just share your opinions.

This is a great opportunity for us to come together and do something life changing each month and try to make a difference in someone’s life. We know there are many of you who have already shared some of your ideas.  Now is the time to put them into action.

March Mission of the Month - Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) is the worldwide leader in funding research to cure type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly and lasts a lifetime. JDRF is the leading funder and advo-cate of type 1 diabetes science.

JDRF's mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. JDRF is also committed to developing new and better treatments that im-prove the lives of people with type 1 diabetes in the near term and keep them healthy while advancing toward a cure.

General Diabetes Facts Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting every organ system. There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which a person's body still produces insulin but is unable to use it effectively. Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes Facts Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental trig-gers are involved.

Throughout the month of March at Fish Lake Lutheran you will have the opportunity to contribute a financial donation towards the JDRF. Donations can be placed in the offering plates as well as mailed in or dropped off directly in the church office. As always, thank you so much for your continued generosity to our Missions of the Month!
